Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 2024 DTCA changes?

The Defence Trade Controls Amendment Act 2024 enables licence-free trade for most defence items among AUKUS partners and creates new offences for unauthorised supply of DSGL technology and services. These provisions commence in March 2025.

How does ITAR affect my exports?

If your product includes U.S.-origin components or technology listed on the USML, ITAR applies. Re-export or third-country transfers require U.S. State Department approval, with strict record-keeping and compliance obligations.

Who can help with complex export applications?

Contact Defence Export Controls (DEC) or the Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS) for tailored support, guidance, and pre-assessment of export applications.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What evidence should I retain?

Keep permits, consignee/end-use statements, shipment docs, and communications for at least seven years or your contractual requirement.

How are denied party screens logged?

Screens are captured with timestamp, list version, and user ID; export a PDF from the checklist card for audit.

What triggers an ‘Action Required’ alert?

Approaching due dates, missing documents, or policy changes (e.g., DTCA updates) generate action flags until resolved.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which grants are best for new exporters?

The Defence Industry Development Grant and Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) are ideal starting points for SMEs expanding into global defence markets.

Can I apply for multiple grants at once?

Yes, as long as there’s no overlap in funding for the same costs or deliverables. Defence SA or ODIS can help structure combined funding applications.

What is the typical grant approval timeline?

Grant approvals usually take 6–12 weeks after submission, depending on the complexity of the project and verification of eligibility documentation.

      © 2025 Team UNO

Team UNO, a cohort of emerging leaders from the Defence Industry Leadership Program (DILP), developed ADEXA as a practical response to challenges uncovered in our research project: Improving Australia’s Competitiveness in Export Markets.

Our study explored how Australia can enhance its position in global defence exports while safeguarding national sovereignty and building resilient sovereign industrial capability. Through literature reviews, targeted surveys, and stakeholder interviews, we identified recurring pain points — fragmented compliance systems, limited visibility of export pathways, and inefficiencies in grant access and reporting.

ADEXA (Australian Defence Export Accelerator) is our proposed digital solution. It unifies export permits, compliance monitoring, funding discovery, and market intelligence into a single, intuitive ecosystem — reducing friction, improving regulatory transparency, and empowering SMEs to grow with confidence in international defence markets.
